Cakes for thought is a project led by artist Marja Viitahuhta, where cakes and pastries are designed and made in honor of prominent feminist thinkers. The recipes are inspired by their ideas and work.

In the Cakes for thought workshops we will both bake cakes and discuss the specific theme of each workshop. Fragments and readings from the production of the person who inspired the cake in question will be heard as well. The workshops will open perspectives of feminism in relation to climate politics, gender diversity and intersectionality.

Each workshop is hosted, alongside the artist, by a guest who will talk about the theme of the day based on their own expertise:

Marja Viitahuhta (FI)

Marja Viitahuhta (formerly Mikkonen, b. 1979) is a media artist whose works have been short films, performances, installations, photographs and collages. She has a degree in performing arts from the Turku Academy of Arts and a master's degree in fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts. Her works have been screened internationally at film festivals and exhibitions, and her early film 99 Years of My Life has been awarded in the Cinéfondation series of the Cannes Film Festival, and acquired as part of the collections of both MoMA and Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum. Her works have dealt with mortality in relation to existence, examined women’s autobiographical stories and experiences, and explored the relationship between text and image.

In addition to her artistic work, Viitahuhta has worked as an art teacher and lectured at Aalto University, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Turku University of Applied Sciences. Viitahuhta has also served on the board and exhibition selection panel of Galleria Huuto since 2009. She is also a member of AV-arkki, the Centre for Finnish Media Art.

Viitahuhta has also experience of waitressing and working in cafés, and she has designed and realized menus and catering for several short films and events.
